CHORT

Chort is the most popular character in Ukrainian demonology. He has many names, but it is better not to speak them aloud to avoid summoning him. He looks like a man with horns and long ears, covered with black or brown fur, with goat legs and a skinny tail. He can turn into a handsome man, a stone, whirlwind, goat, ram, or horse. Chort lives where they like, but are especially fond of the marshes, bushes of elderberries, shrubs, abandoned houses, or mills. It is believed, that long ago he created caves and wastelands, and also tobacco and booze. Chort is cunning and can deceive people, make them lose their minds, steal their children, or just make them do various evil deeds. Only a smart and clever person can defeat Chort.
