Vodianyk - in Ukrainian folklore is the ruler of lakes, rivers, and all bodies of water. It is believed, that they are the drowned people and can turn into a catfish, a goat, a duck, a cat, a child, or an old man. Vodianyk rules over mermaids, and fish and crayfish are their livestock. They do not like drunkards and can drown them. They often make fun of fishermen or girls, scare them, overturn boats, and push them into the water. According to tradition, some fishermen leave boiled fish or blocks of salt in the water to appease Vodianyk.
