VIY

Viy is a character in the story of the same name by Mykola Gogol, which became quite popular and entered classical Ukrainian demonology. His prototype was the so-called Sholudyvyi Buniaka - an evil underground creature that could kill or curse with just one look. It was believed that even entire cities went underground after his single sight. Viy was often depicted as a demonic giant with long eyelashes that prevented him from opening his eyes. He helped witches and embodied overwhelming fear and the underworld.
