Poterchata (singular Potercha) - In Ukrainian folklore are the ghosts (or souls) of the dead children who were not properly buried or were abandoned by their mothers. They do not harm people, but sometimes they can scare or cause minor damage. It was believed that for seven years Potercha walks the earth, and sometimes turns into a stork, an owl, or a creepy creature. If someone gives them a handkerchief, their souls become free. But if it does not happen, in the eighth year they will be turned into a bird forever.
