MERMAID
(RUSALKA)

Mermaids are among the most popular creatures in Ukrainian folklore. Unlike their West European counterparts, Ukrainian mermaids don't have fish tails; instead, they resemble young beautiful girls, often naked or dressed in light white dresses. It's believed that young girls who drown in rivers and lakes transform into mermaids. Some even consider them as water element goddesses. They dwell in rivers, ponds, seas, and lakes. After Mermaid Sunday (the Sunday following Pentecost), they come to the land, wandering through fields and forests, leading round dances, and enticing young men to play the flute for them. During Mermaid Week, it's strictly forbidden to swim in any bodies of water, so that mermaids don't take one away forever. When a mermaid asks you, 'Mugwort or Parsley?' your answer better be 'Mugwort.' If you say 'Parsley,' she'll tickle you to death.
