Coral snakes are a large group of elapid (Elapidae) snakes. They possess one of the most potent venoms of any snake. However, relatively few bites are recorded due to their reclusive nature and the fact they generally inhabit sparsely populated areas.

Asp is the modern anglicisation of the word aspis, which in antiquity referred to any one of several venomous snake species found in the Nile region. The specific epithet, aspis, is a Greek word that means viper.
